Road map for integrated and holistic national Nutrition strategy

A road map for integrated and holistic approach to food security at national level involves developing a national Nutrition strategy and a detailed work plan. Simplified bullet points are

The Nutrition Strategy should:
  • Be developed by involving all stakeholders
  • Project a National Vision statement for Nutrition
  • Have a clear a national Mission statement and Mission statement for each stakeholder
  • Develop a work-plan with clear short and long term goals and timeline for each goal
  • Have progress indicators specific for each stakeholder
  • State the current situation and desired goals and the path in-between
  • Have high-level political buy-in and include higher officials that support and supervise the implementation of the approved work-plan
  • Have pre-planned schedules for the stakeholders to report to a task-group through regular seminar
The work-plan should include:

Creation of an integrated, multi-disciplinary National Nutrition Unit/Institute

National nutrition situational analysis that produce timely situational reports to identify vulnerable groups (e.g first 1000 days in life) at Zoba, Sub Zoba and village levels and monitor development (some work so far conducted: Eri KAP survey 2021, Trial of Improved practices 2021, Minimum dietary diversity in Eritrea 2021)

Launch a higher level nutrition education (curriculum for MSc drafted)

Launch interdisciplinary National Research Centre in the area of nutrition, food and health science (research-based data generation, a research laboratory proposed and some work initiated)

Sensitizing decision-makers and all sectors to nutrition (Work in sensitizing stakeholders initiated and is continuing)

Nomination of a Nutrition Focal Person in all Zobas to be trained (ToT) in nutrition and tasked nutrition-related responsibilities at the Zoba level and Sub Zoba level.

Awareness-raising campaigns at the national level (by involving MoI and MoE, and producing research-based information to be used in the development of information materials at the national level)

Development National plan for optimal resource utilization and distribution

Holistic approach that improves economic situation at the household levels (through house hold nutrition value additioan), emphasizing the role and involvement of all members of the family

Launch a National Food and Nutrition authority to regulate and standardize food production, import and consumption
